 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation: [se'lena kinta'nija 'peres] 16 April 1971 - - March 31, 1995), known mononymously as Selena, was an American Tejano singer. The "Queen Tejano music", her contribution to music and fashion helped make her one of the most well-known entertainers from Mexico of all time. In the year 2020, Billboard magazine put her in third position on their list of "Greatest Latino Artists of All Time", based on both Latin albums and the Latin charts of songs. Her style of dress earned her the title "Tejano Madonna". Her fashion choices make her one of the most renowned Latin artists. Quintanilla and Suzette Quintanilla. In the 80s, she frequently critiqued for singing Tejano music which was a predominantly male-dominated genre. Also, she was denied bookings at Texas venues. Her popularity increased when she was awarded the Tejano Music Award as Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987. The award was won nine times. The singer was signed to EMI Latin in 1989. Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) peaked at number one on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums Chart for eight consecutive month. The critics of the music called it"the "breakthrough record" of her career due to its commercial success. One of the songs on it, "Como la Flor" was one of her most popular tracks. Live! (1993) was nominated for Best Mexican/American Album at 1994 Grammy Awards. It was the first Tejano album to be awarded this award. Amor Prohibido became one the most sold Latin albums in America in 1994. The album was widely acclaimed as the first Tejano music album to be commercially viable and quickly became one of the most popular Latin subgenres of Latin music at the time.
